The price is right. A tiny house costs anywhere from $20,000 to $50,000 to build, some did it for about $12,000 with reclaimed and salvaged materials. I'm going to blame this facination with tiny houses on my Scottish father and VERY Scottish grandparents. Granda and Grandma Durkie were born in 1913 just before WWI and grew up during the Great Depression. They were like the extreme couponers that you see on reality TV when something was on sale you bought enough to last the 6 months before it would be on sale again. One of the things we remember (and joke about) most was the napkin saving, Granda never threw out his napkins, not even the used ones. We'd go over for Sunday dinner and there would be a huge stack on the breakfast bar, some where slightly used and others were biohazards, Mom used to throw a few out every time we went over. I love the idea of living with no debt and very few expenses and as a result being able to work at a job I enjoy regardless of how much I'm paid, purchase quality goods instead of the cheaper knock off, go on the adventures I want to explore without having to choose between what I want and whether I'd like to put anything in my saving account this month.
More thoughts on tiny houses to come.
